Looking for More Square Footage? Convert Your Attic Into Another Room

Remodeling an attic is a great way to take better advantage of a usually misused space and to increase the value of your house. There are many reasons why you would want to remodel the attic, maybe new kids in the house need a proper playroom, or you feel like books are eating you alive and need an actual library to store them. Regardless of what you dream for you attic, is usually a great idea to invest in this home improvement. However, before you jump into the remodeling, there are a few things you should consider.

Many experts refer to the “rule of 7” when it comes to attic renovation; the space should be at least 7 feet tall, 7 feet while, and 70 square feet, this will give you enough ground to play around with different space ideas. Next, is always a good idea to have an expert check out the structure, since you will be probably adding things that will be significantly heavier than boxes filled with seasonal clothes. Finally, evaluate the access to your attic; are those stairs strong and wide enough to move furniture up? Or if you need to build new stairs, will the structure be able to hold them?

If the answer is positive for all those questions, then you are ready to move towards attic cleaning, renovation and improvement. Here are our three favorite ideas for what you could do with that abandoned, unused space to make it the pride of your home.

1. Game Room for Kids (…or Adults!)

Since the attic is usually separated from the living area of the house, it makes the perfect space for play dates for kids and adults alike. You could childproof the area with padding floors, fill it with games and toys in built-in cubbies and let the kids enjoy without too much noise restriction. However, if there are not kids at the house, you could take the flat screen TV, sound system, and video consoles to have a game station getaway available without leaving the comfort of your house.

2. Master Bedroom or Nursery

Although people usually don’t hang out in their attics, they tend to have the best lighting in the house because of their inclined ceiling windows, and considering they are mostly quiet, that makes them a great space for a nursery. If there aren’t any babies coming any time soon, thing about transforming your attic into a new master bedroom (depending on space) or simply your new romantic getaway.

3. Home Office/Reading Room

Again, considering the good lighting and the possible silence in the attic, what better place to focus and have a great work-from-home day, or maybe just a place to store the books and also go up, relax, and read!
